Are You Feeling Burned By Markdowns? I Am

Another infusion of new products on the WMTM upload today. I'm feeling very frustrated that I purchased this jacket at full price (which was very pricey) only to have it now marked down to a normal price range within just a few weeks. I love this jacket and have worn it a lot since I got it, and have gotten lots of compliments on it, I just wish I could have benefited from the markdown price on it. Had this jacket been priced at the usual price range for this type of lululemon jacket, it would not have gone to markdown as quickly.

Have any of you been burned by markdowns over the past three weeks of new products going to WMTM? Discuss.

Here is a very interesting article out today of something happening to lululemon stock prices lululemon stock gains acquisition rumour with rumours of an impending acquisition. If you've been part of the discussions in the comments here over this past quarter, none of that article will be a surprise.

  1. YUP! I GOT THAT BLACK ONE AND AM PISSED!

  2. Yes! And I've been burned just shopping WMTM too.

Bought the neon pink power y when it dropped to $39. The next week, price dropped to $34!

PLUS, the chest fits tighter--so the fit is off, at least for this color.

So, now I force myself to slow down, if I'm shopping WMTM. I let it sit at least a day, sometimes a week--and I pull the trigger if I remember to.

Prices keep fluctuating, which I find annoying.

LLM, if you've been enjoying the beautiful blue jacket, don't worry about it. I purchase full price when I love something, when I feel great in it--and I wear immediately. Lea

    1. Thats true. It's not at all a regrettable purchase, I've gotten a ton of wear out of it so far so it's not like I was hesitant on keeping it in the first place.

  3. I bought this jacket as well, paid full price. I really needed it for a trip and will wear it a ton this winter. Its gorgeous and fits like a glove but I'm pissed too! 119 would have meant I could have purchased something in addition to the jacket. I'm tempted to order the full price stuff to just try on, send it back and then wait for WMTM.

    1. Yep! Just keep ordering and returning as long as things are full price in stock to extend the return date until they go on WMTM.

    2. I already do this, and in fact I did it with this exact jacket a few weeks ago!

Did anyone else notice the arms are slightly longer on the white than the black?

      Delete
    3. Edited. I buy and return once, just to make sure the fit is right. I definitely don't do repeat buys. :)

    4. Same here!! Lulu has pretty much trained me to wait for the markdown now, sometimes even the markdown on the markdown. I would have NEVER waited for WMTM 5 years ago...

  4. Yes! I bought maze jacquard WU, 2 essential tanks, a full price CRB and 2 FTBW. All went on markdown just after the 2 week return mark...for the price difference I could have saved $110.

I'm considering returning my Florence Nulux tights just to buy them again renew the return timeline in case they go on markdown too. If they do...it'll be the last full price purchase I ever make. Not worth it anymore.

    1. I would absolutely do that with the Nulux tights. Rebuy them for two weeks so you 'reserve' your item.

    2. They don't honor their prices like other companies do so people -should- do this.

    3. I just feel like that is extremely ridiculous to have to do something like that. I have been burned too and I think LLL has overpriced pretty much everything these days but I will not go out of my way to buy and return and buy and return just to wait until it goes to markdown, no way in hell. Too much hassle to keep an eye on bank statement or credit card statement and mail or return to store back and forth, yeah no way. That is ridiculous imo. No offence to others, but I would honestly have to question my sanity if I considered doing that, lol. I just won't buy it at all if I don't feel the regular price is worth it and just wait for it to go to WMTM, there is nothing I absolutely need anyway. LLL should offer price adjustments if something has gone there within a reasonable amount of time since purchasing full price. OR just make the damn prices reasonable to begin with, enough of this crazy overpricing.

  7. Yes, I just got white one last week. Still have tags on. So I'm going to return it and buy it at a lower price. It's ridiculous. I'm sure first mile jacket will follow soon as I don't see it selling out very fast at this insane price. From now on I will wait to buy new product. Have been burned a few time already. So I have learned my lesson.

  8. I remember when WMTM uploads had a handful of things-now it's full inventory runs, or so it seems. It seems to me it would make more sense to do one GOOD monthly upload than several crappy smaller ones where things go to WMTM so quickly. It just doesn't make business sense anymore; the lust factor is gone. I used to wait up for uploads when they were at 3 AM, setting my alarm for certain items. I haven't done that in YEARS.

It's all making me jump ship to Athleta (at least for my outerwear/street clothes--I still prefer lulu for the gym and leggings). I bought the downabout vest and the CYA Rock Springs Jacket from Athleta and adore both pieces AS WELL AS their amazing return policy and ability to use GAP Rewards (i.e., a LOYALTY program! For loyal customers!!). It really is the key for me--the amazing customer service. I have never returned something I've worn before, but I was able to with an Athleta dress that ended up being way too low-cut. With lulu, I'd have been screwed. So basically, my lulu love affair is disintegrating ;)

    1. I'm with you on Athleta! 90% of what I run in is Lulu, but when it comes to everday/travel/street wear Athleta has some great, much more budget friendly, stuff. I'm also a Gap rewards member, and I've spent all of my last couple rewards there. Their metro line of pants is AWESOME

    2. I totally agree with you on all this. I still wear Lulu running tights and tops because every time I try something else I don't like it as much. I also love Lulu wunder textured wunder unders for casual wear and most of their stuff that's stretch french terry. But basically my entire regular (stay at home mom) wardrobe is Athleta. And jeans from Madewell! I got the Rock Springs vest from Athleta and it's really lovely.

  9. What's going on with things going to markdown so quickly? Seems like a sign of poor management and planning. The lack of price adjustments is incredibly frustrating and yet another example of how Lulu holds its customers hostage with crappy customer service, just like the two-week return window and no returns on WMTM.

Meanwhile I just bought two tops at Athleta on sale (and we're talking decent sales here, like $70 down to $39 and $54 down to $29) and the following week they came out with an extra 20% off sale items coupon code. I called them and they happily honored the coupon since it had been less than 14 days since my order and refunded my credit card the 20% I would have saved. Guess which company I feel more confident shopping from?

    2. I had to return my chi tank after wearing less than 10 times over 5-6 months. Stitching was unraveling so they send it to fix it but it came back with different color threads. It functions well but i didn't want a tank with different stitch colors on it. I complained it and the store sales said "then what do you want? This is fixed." I asked if there's anything else they can do on my tank and she offer me for a refund. Unfortunately this tank ended up on sales on last month at $14 so she have me $14 store credit instead of original price. I knew i wouldnt wear it anymore so i took the credit but i didnt feel good. Lulu offered me a full price store credit when similar happened.

  10. I haven't bought much new lately, and when I do, it seems to be staple items in basic colours that don't make it to wmtm. I haven't been affected by the recent wmtm additions, but all in all the lulu lustre has kind of worm off in many ways for me. I am sad that Canada didn't get that Barkberry scuba on wmtm though :(

  11. That's funny. I've been waiting and waiting for the ceremony sweatpant to go on markdown. It came out in September shortly after the take ten pant! And it's still regular price. I bought the black in size 8 in a store because most stores were sold out and only some marked it down but only the deep indigo and grey not black. Ive been keeping an eye out online and now officially all the black in my size is sold out. Oh well I guess you win some and loose some :(

  12. Agree, I just bought the Outrun 17" Crop at full price, and within the 14-day return period they went down to about half price! :(

  13. Yup some prices went up..lol. I did snag the runway jackets at 99 waited for them to drop...ALBERTA Lake and the parfaot pink one....they are soooo flattering especially from the sides...makes my tummy dissapeared and gives illusion of slender waist...back is cute. I sized up because the tts was a bit snug on hips and arm pits...Hopefully arms won't be too long. I ventured to wild side and ordered kdeer leggings...nothing on upload ....

  14. Yes and I've made my own price adjustment. If lulu wants to play these games, then game on! :p

  15. I have always been a WMTM shopper, so I am actually happy about all these huge uploads. The only thing I've paid full price for in a long time is the pure black SS and LS Swiftlies. So, I think my mindset has always been to only pay what I want to pay for an item.

I will say however, that doing markdowns quickly and then not allowing PAs or returns for WMTM will not sit well with people, so long term, who knows, they may need to take a look at those policies.

Your coat is beautiful and you will probably have a very low cost per wear for it. But it is probably still a bit of a bummer.

  16. How credible is that link about the stock price? Either that was an old story that they should have taken down, or I seriously challenge their data. A look at cbbc.com shows the stock making only a very modest 0.3% increase today. It opened at 57.01 and closed at 57.21. After hours, it's up another $0.03. These seem like very normal daily fluctuations to me. I think someone's trying to move the market.

    1. Interesting. Who do you think is motivated to move the market?

      Delete
    2. Anyone who owns the stock, but particularly anyone who bought it higher than its current price. I suppose analysts who also have a much higher price target might also have an interest in getting it back in a range that makes them look knowledgeable.

      Delete
    3. Their stock has dropped approximately $20.00 since their last quarterly financials and has only come up slightly from their low in the $56.00 range so I don't see a huge spike upwards. I did see about a $2.00 increase the other day on some small trades but $57.21 is a far cry from the $76.00 range it was a few months ago. Anon 2:28pm you are right that some analysts had it pegged in the low to mid $60.00 range after this last quarter but there is nothing positive coming out of Lululemon these days to justify any significant upswing.

    6. Remember that it may have been a web team/system error. I saw the Flurry Fighter uploaded to WMTM yesterday, too, but when I went to see what sizes, there were no sizes. This kind of glitch happens EVERY Thursday. Phantom stuff appears and disappears. Much more likely to be a web team screw up than every single size selling out quickly.

But if you're really searching for that Scuba, you should call a store. They can check inventory for items that are sold out online. I think they should be able to order it for you from another store. I'm not sure what price they'd charge, but it seems like it's worth a try if you really like the jacket.

  21. I bought the rush hour jacket during their customer appreciation night for 20% off so I didn't get burned as heavily but still, there's a $7 difference if I buy online. I'm seriously tempted to. Just so annoyed at this company right now. Clearly their new pricing strategy isn't working but dropping things to WMTM this quickly is also going to backfire on them. They better right their ship quick before it's too late.

  22. I've kept track of my Lulu purchases for the last two years and found an interesting trend. In 2015, 2/3 of my purchases were at full price, but in 2016 only 1/3 were. I still spent roughly the same each year - in fact a little more this year - but got a lot more items this year. I think scooping up 4 CRBs on markdown probably skewed the numbers somewhat, but there were also a lot of other discounted purchases.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If I had a company and were making it attractive to sell, particularly if I had a buyer all lined up, I would want as much stock to go through the tills as possible. Both in terms of units sold and profits. So maybe something is afoot.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It really bothers me that they're selling lots of older styles with barely any discounts on WMTM!

We're talking things from last summer's online warehouse sale- I got the Find Your Bliss Jacket on markdown for $39 last yr and they're selling it for $79 now.

  25. They are clearly overinventoried.... when is their fiscal year, does anyone know? Maybe they're trying to dump it and have a bad quarter, or just have a poor year and start anew.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Exactly. Fiscal year is February-January, which would make 10/31 end of 3rd quarter.

    2. Thank you! This makes sense, although they didn't give themselves much time to move through the inventory!
I always remember reading that their high margins (i.e.- very little markdowns or discounting) was one of the key reasons LLL was so profitable and valuable. How times have changed!

      Delete
    3. Indeed they have! So strange. Wonder if they'll roll out further markdowns over weekend to move the inventory more quickly.

      Delete
    4. I'm not sure that's changed. Some of the analysis I read for 2nd quarter said that profits were rising slightly, but only because of increased pricing. That worked when people were still buying a bunch at full price, but even over the last few months, Lulu has taught us to be extremely reluctant to pay full price, so soon they are going to be struggling.

The need to fix the designs and quality. If they do that, even with the increased pricing, I think they'll increase sales. As it is, we're either paying something like 10-20% more than a year ago for the exact same item (Swiftlies, for example) or we're being asked to pay more for new items that we don't want. Not a winning strategy.

  27. What a lovely problem to have! In Australia we only have about 10 items in wmtm each week (if we're lucky). Seriously guys, if the prices are too expensive don't buy them full price. If the majority of people do this, lulu will get the message!

    1. I think that's what's already happened........... that's why there's s much on WMTM!

  28. I won't say I was burned with the two items I bought that went to WMTM shortly thereafter because I like them but it really is making me question myself as to ever buying anything new from this Company. I bought the Rush Hour Jacket and although I like it I didn't need to get it right away as I have the Kanto Katch Me Jacket which is very similar. I also bought the Runaway Jacket that I could have waited for but I didn't want to miss out again on buying it because I passed on it when it first came out 1-2years ago. I am going to have to remind myself from now on that not many items sell out anymore and to sit back and wait it out for something I like.

My spending has dropped dramatically in 2016 and for the all the product that has a gone to WMTM in 2016 other than the two jackets I already bought there has been nothing I wanted and that sums up how I feel about most of what came out this year. I won't even buy the DSP in Greyvy, a pant I love and a colour I love, because they changed the fit so I can no longer buy them. As for my beloved Swiftlies, the price increase has now made me stop and think twice before I buy and the markdown on colours I was not in love with is not enough to make me buy them.

I see the fast turnaround of new product going to WMTM as desperation to move what they can before their next quarterly financials and year-end.

  29. I've purchased a few things on WMTM recently and the price dropped the next week, but I expect that. The only thing I've bought full price recently is the Shibori WUPs. I wasn't even going to get them but the fomo was too great. I was thinking about getting the Runaway or Rush Hour but I got the Down for a Run and the Kanto last year. AnonymousOctober 27, 2016 at 1:10 PM almost sold me the Runaway. *MUST RESIST*

  32. As others have already pointed out, patience, self control and being strategic and stubborn pay off. I am not feeling burned because I will actually wait for a lot of items to go to wmtm. If they don't, oh well, whatever. It's only clothing and I, like many here, have the first world problem of having more than enough. If you are just now getting into this brand and are buying key pieces, yes, I would be p!ssed if this happened to me. I have learned that at minimum I leave the hand tags on for the first two weeks and do not wear the item. I make sure to return it if I am not truly in love with it or the price does not sit well (regardless of being able to afford it). In my experience, jackets always go to markdown. I have quite a few and I have never paid the full price. Sure I had to wait some months before that reduced price happened, but I always had other items that I was using and there was never an urgency for whatever season. As for wmtm itself, if something on wmtm is still a high price (price points of $50-$80 or higher before tax still not chump change, imho). Or, I'm only "saving" $4-$10, that's not a deal and I'm unlikely to buy it. They're going to post bras now at a "reduced" price, which is really the former full retail price? Not falling for it. For quite some time I have not given in to the FOMO as LLL has continued to play games and make missteps. One of the most recent being their pricing increases - now we clearly see how that is not working out for them. More importantly, throw in deterioration of quality and lack of design appeal and details, in some ways they almost make it easy to back off. I've been a LLL customer for 10 years. There was a time when yes, such superior quality, fit, comfort, and performance: this price is worth it. Gosh, a lot of my older gear still looks brand new because I've stayed on the classic path and rotated everything so nothing is overly used. I have said it before, they don't want the loyalist. This customer is a problem for them as they know too much. And when you have self control as a customer and speak with your wallet, it's an even bigger problem for them.

As for current full retail or wmtm, nope, no rush. If you give in now, they win because you found your comfort level and they got your money. Like it or not, it is a battle of wills. I'll wait for Boxing Day or a true (online) warehouse sale. And if the prices suck still, they can continue to keep it.

    3. I totally agree, but I am also one of the people that has enough old stuff to last a few lifetimes. I also agree that if I was new to the brand I'd be like, "WTF Lululemon?! I just bought this last week and you won't do a price adjustment?"

      Delete
  33. I haven't been feeling burned, necessarily, because I've just decided that I will no longer pay the price increase. I haven't bought anything full price in ages, whereas I used to purchase items at upload regularly. For the most part, I will pay the WMTM price, and it seems nearly everything has been hitting markdown! I've been pleased with the items I've snagged on sale over the last few months. Also, this big WMTM drop means I got some Christmas shopping done way early!

I have been annoyed to see items on WMTM from seasons past at a higher price than they were previously. I bought the spring fling jacket (which is awesome and I highly recommend) on markdown for $79 ... now its on markdown for $130-something? Also, all of the prices keep switching, and prices aren't even consistent between the app and the website? Very confusing.

I definitely am bummed about missing the bark berry scuba. I've been searching ebay for MONTHS in search of it. So gutted that I missed it. If anyone is trying to part with their size 6 or 8, I'm your girl!

    ReplyDelete
  34. THe only one getting burned in all this IS Lululemon. To echo was has already been mentioned above, I now refuse to purchase at full price (even a staple I know I will get hella use out of). I consistently purchase, online, at upload for try on reasons only, and then proceed to return in store. This process, which many now do and effectively "reserves" your item until it his WMTM, is what will cost Lululemon more in the long run in shipping charges. They should now figure out to either honour price adjustments or rethink their pricing strategy entirely since Lulu customers are smart.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The other thing now that they have overpriced everything and people are now waiting for things to go to WMTM is that it gives us time to really think about whether or not we actually really want and need them after all! I've found that I would normally just impulse purchase everything in the past, but now that everything is overpriced (as in truly not worth the price) I am (for the most part, I am working on it!) waiting it out and by the time it hits WMTM I'm over it and no longer want it. This happen to me with the Rush Hour Jacket, really wanted it when it came out but knew that it was ridiculously priced and decided to wait, now that the price is more reasonable on WMTM I have changed my mind on it. If it had of been reasonable to begin with it probably would be in my closet right now (although working on this kind of thing! haha). I have been burned by Moonlit Magenta Swiftly LS and CRBII though.... grrr... I needed to have more patience there, but could not resist gorgeous purple that I don't have any similar to... I need to remind myself that waiting is smarter option when I don't even need anything... same thing with Emperor Blue Define that went to WMTM last week... was lusting after this one but had patience to wait it out until WMTM and now wish I waited longer as I am pretty sure the price will drop again on WMTM eventually, but again it isnt something I actually need so would have been smarter to wait it out or not purchase at all... Working on reminding myself that missing out or choosing not to buy at all isnt a bad thing when my closet is as full as it is! It isnt a matter of being able to afford it or not, it is much more than that for me. It feels really good getting this addiction under control to be honest.

    1. I agree Anon 8:10am and not only does waiting for product to go to WMTM give me time to consider whether or not I really want it and like it enough to buy it but it also gives me time to reflect on all the things this management team has done to piss me off and many times that alone has stopped me from buying.

      Delete
    2. well said to you both! Totally agree that this addiction needs to stop. I love my Lulu clothes, especially the vintage styles and I'm trying my best to preserve them because it definitely appears this company is going down and not coming back. They don't want to cater to us old-timers anymore, they want to impulse buying newbies. I'm sick of the games and the schemes and the treatment of their customers. Enough is enough.

At my store event last month, I purchased the SE High Time Rhythm pants and sure enough last week they went to mark down for less than with my "customer appreciation" discount of 15% they gave at the event. Even the black ones went on sale (which I thought was a safe purchase since they were a basic color). They would have more wallet share if they revived the classics - CRB, pace setter skirt, etc. So disappointing...

    2. Agree with anon @ 9:39, but I would add that I don't see a ton of difference between the different versions of the brushed speed tights (some have slight gathers at the calves, but that's the only thing I've noticed and I have version 2, 3, and 4). So personally, I'd check for various versions on eBay and other sites to see what color combo/price I could find and wouldn't really worry about which version it was.

  40. If you paid for this with a credit card, check if it has a program to refund you the difference. For example, Citibank has Price Rewind, you fill out a form, attach your receipt, showing the price you paid, and the page showing a lower price for the item, and they refund you the difference. Maybe your credit card company has something like that too.

  41. My store was having a "purple tag event" today. We have a hybrid so a large sale section - all bras and shorts $20, tanks I think $30, crops $40, pants $50, jackets $100. I bought 3 Free to Be bras, wunder under crops and the purple Rush Hour jacket.

  42. Does LLL have a Black Friday markdown situation every year? I seem to remember last year in London going into the store and they had a lot more on markdown.

    1. @ Lottie_LLL - I think you may have luck in store in the US. In Canada I think they try to do the same now. Not being the US, we technically didn't have Black Friday sales until a few years ago (the first year sucked, they weren't even sales that differed from what we normally get). They have improved to keep Canadians from going over the border. Retail is not doing that well in Canada.

For online, last year I think they did a huge wmtm upload a week prior to Black Friday to get your money sooner before the other retailers.

Plus they release some fugly special edition stuff on BF, e.g. sequin/stardust theme that went over like a ton of bricks.

  44. Re : waiting out on stuff to get to wmtm. I totally agree with other comments that it's a great idea. The only thing is that sometimes it takes a month or two and by the time the item gets there it's too cold to wear it. Or your size will sell out. For example I really liked Embrace the space hoodie( after having read your blog LLM;) Im a size 4 in everything , but tried it in my size down and liked the fit better. It's already sold out online in size 2 therefore I can't use Ebates bummer ! So I went to my store last night and bought it at full price thinking that now is the perfect time to wear it and that by the time they will go on md there wont probably be my size available anyways.
